A Parent’s Viewpoint – Guest Post Part 3 from Rori
Part #3 of the Series by Rori – read Part #1 Here and Part #2 Here
My husband is a “nicknamer”! He gives nicknames to all our kids, our kid’s friends, and to so many people in our lives. He had a bit of difficulty saying many of the kids Haitian names, so the nicknames started flying. He had names like “Little B”, “Larry”, “Sweet Mary”, “Izzy”, “Monte”…… and by the time we left even the kids were calling each other by those names. (Note from Tom – talked to Rori on Jan. 30 and she said that Molly said the kids are still calling each other by the nicknames)
We played a lot of basketball, particularly “double ball knockout”, played catch, drew pictures, and got to sit in school with the older kids one day. We were both blown away at how quickly these children learn. Joyce does a truly amazing job teaching these children and they are such sponges just soaking up all that they have the opportunity to learn. These are smart children who for the most part have never had the opportunity that we take for granted to attend school and learn!
Come back next Tuesday, February 7. We’re going to be playing a 15 minute video that Rori and her husband put together about meeting their kids for the first time and their time at GLA.
