The Power of One…..

I’m going to tell you the story of Dana, a nurse from the Twin Cities area.   There are a couple of main things that this illustrates to me:

  • The power of one person who isn’t afraid of stepping outside of her comfort zone.
  • The generosity of so many companies who have and/or make the supplies that are needed in times of disaster.

Don’t forget to read all the way to the bottom to see how you can help……

So now, the story of Dana.   I don’t remember exactly when, but I got a call from Dana and here an overview of what she had to say:

  • I’m a home health care nurse who used to work in a neonatal intensive care unit.
  • I want to help, what can I do?    Can I get in touch with medical supply companies and hospitals?

I told her I thought that was a great idea and got her the list of medical supplies that we need.

So she started making some phone calls and meeting with some companies.

and she got this……

and this……

and all of these……

Here’s a list of everything that she had given to her:

6 cases of Enfacare infant formula (6 cans in each case)
6 cases of Boost Plus chocolate flavor
3 cases of Peptamin Jr. 1.5 cal
3 cases of Pediasure with Fiber and fos
7 cases of Kid Essentials 1.0 chocolate flavor
0.75 case of Kid Essentials 1.5 cal vanilla
1 very small box with assorted electrodes for cardiac monitoring and a pediatric stethescope
1 medium box filled with oxygen equipment and some pulse ox probes
1 large box filled with nebulizer equipment and neb meds
1 large box filled with wound care items
1 small box filled with IV tubing
1 very large box filled with suction equipment and some urinary catheters
1 medium box of syringes and med cups for medication administration and a FILAC 3000 battery operated thermometer
1 large box of pediatric aerochambers
1 large box of 10fr. suction catheter kits with gloves

Now I’ve got to admit, I don’t even know what a lot of this stuff does, but I know that there are kids in Haiti who can benefit from having the supplies down there.

You’re probably wondering, “Okay, Tom, that’s great that the medical supply companies and hospitals in the Twin Cities are generous, but how can I help?”

It’s pretty simple – she got so much stuff that she needs help covering the shipping costs of getting it to Colorado.   As she told me, “It’s WAY beyond what I was expecting!”

So, are you willing to help cover the costs of getting those medical supplies to our Colorado office?

Here’s what I’m thinking……

If you’re willing to help Dana get these medical supplies to Colorado, either go to the “earthquake relief” widget on the right side, or the paypal spot on the main site and make a donation (of whatever amount you are able to do).   Then, send me an e-mail at tvanderwell@sbcglobal.net and let me know, “Hey Tom, I just donated $___ to help cover the cost of shipping Dana’s stuff to Colorado.”  We’ll take care of the rest.

And in case you are wondering, if you know anyone else who is able to collect a large amount of stuff but needs assistance in shipping, I’d be happy to put their “story” out on the blog as well.

And after hearing what a difference one person who is able and willing to ask questions can make, ask yourself a question,  “What can I do to help the kids in Haiti?”

Thanks!

Tom Vanderwell
