Container Day!
Hello to all from the Colorado office! This is Holli here. Kate and I agreed to split up blog job for the office. We just finished up packing our 6th container with relief supplies for Haiti. We’ve gone pro at this by now! What used to take us an entire day we can now get done in a few hours with enough people. Maria keeps the boxes well organized so that the loading goes fairly quickly. It’s funny the little things we’ve learned along the way to make filling a container easier. We try and make sure the boxes are always the same dimensions so they stack easily and evenly. It really takes a lot more time with odd sized boxes, you have to fit them into spaces like puzzle pieces
and you would be surprised at how much time it eats up!
We also now own our own forklift. Before we would have to rent one for the day, go pick it up in the the morning and drop it off in the evening. What a pain! John found us a good used forklift for the warehouse. Kati, Maria and I were even taught how to drive it! Some of us are better drivers then others, but I won’t mention any names!
Maria even loaded the first few pallets herself this morning!
Its crazy to think the warehouse has been filled and emptied with donations 6 times since the quake! We’ve met and worked with so many great volunteers. Currently Kate’s two daughters, Mikayla, 15 and Keirstyn, 12, are here right now helping out around the warehouse. Rhyan Buettner, that some of the blog followers might know from GLA where she was a volunteer for 9 months last year and was at GLA for her third trip during the earthquake and helped escort our US adopted kids to the States, is here for the next month as well to help us get caught up with data entry.
Anyone who would like to come pitch in a little time at the office here in Colorado Springs is welcome! We also have a few volunteers slots open in April. We are looking for flexible volunteers willing to help unpack and distribute supplies as well as work with kids and whatever else may come up. If you would be interested shoot us an email. Jean@glahaiti.org or holli@glahaiti.org. If you would like to come help in the office please give us a call ahead of time. 719-638-4348. We love our volunteers!
